What Scent Should You Wear With A Tailored Suit? feat. Sunspel | Richard James

What Scent Should You Wear With A Tailored Suit? feat. Sunspel | Richard James

Savile Row, the famous London tailoring street has been clothing London’s establishment since the early 19th Century.

It started off with more of a focus on evening wear and military dress uniforms, then moved into made-to-measure lounge suits. In the last fifty years it has modernised with newcomers like Richard James and Ozwald Boateng.

There’s an obvious link between clothes and men’s fragrance, with scent often being seen as the finishing touch to an outfit.

As well as the big designer fragrances from fashion brands such as Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Hugo Boss and the rest, there are some notable British examples with a more ‘bespoke’ approach.

Richard James - Savile Row

A brand that changed perceptions of today’s Savile Row also have their own bespoke fragrance. ‘Savile Row’ is a smooth suede leather scent, with a hint of smoky Darjeeling tea and vetiver. As elegant and well-made as a Richard James suit.

Sunspel - Oak Wood

Suits you: Sunspel are a British clothing brand that started in 1860, making underwear, t-shirts and polo shirts. They are credited with introducing boxer shorts to the UK from the U.S. in 1947 and famously Daniel Craig wore a Sunspel polo shirt in ‘Casino Royale’, which gave the brand a whole new lease of life.

They have worked with renowned British perfumer Lyn Harris on two fragrances - and Oak Wood is a stunner. Cedar wood is the hero, supported by angelica seed, camomile and bergamot. Crisp and a perfect staple - just like a Sunspel classic white t-shirt.

Get it: Oak Wood is available as a candle in the USA but currently not in fragrance form - never fear, sign up to our newsletter and we’ll let you know when it drops.

Penhaligon’s - Sartorial

Suits you: Inspired by the workroom at Norton & Sons (tailors at No. 16 Savile Row) this is a fougère given a modern twist. There’s lavender and neroli but then a smokier, steamier base with patchouli and tobacco.

Get it: currently $165 at the brand’s website
